The 20th Anniversary Edition of the Vukovar Film Festival Takes Place from September 2–5 and becomes only the second Croatian film festival ever to have its opening ceremony broadcast live by Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT)!

Over the course of two remarkable decades, the Vukovar Film Festival has established itself as one of Croatia's most significant cultural events, hosting major premieres from both Croatian cinema and the international independent film scene. This year, the festival celebrates its milestone 20th anniversary, marking the occasion with an outstanding programme featuring the latest cinematic gems from around the world. Audiences can look forward to award-winning films from the world's leading film festivals alongside crowd-pleasing commercial titles for a wider audience.

The standout announcement of this year's edition is that the opening ceremony of the 20th Vukovar Film Festival will be broadcast live by Croatian Radiotelevision (HRT). This historic achievement places the festival among Croatia's cultural milestones, making it only the second domestic film festival whose opening ceremony will be televised live by the country's national public broadcaster.

On Wednesday, September 2, from 9:00 p.m. to 9:45 p.m., the opening ceremony will be enjoyed not only by audiences gathered in the beautiful park of Eltz Castle, home to the Vukovar City Museum, but also by viewers across Croatia tuning in to HRT 3, which will broadcast the celebration of the festival's twentieth anniversary live.

"The fact that we have reached an agreement with HRT to broadcast the festival's opening ceremony live fills our entire team with tremendous pride. We truly believe that there is always an audience interested in cultural events like this, even if they are unable to attend in person. This broadcast will allow us to bring the festival to the widest possible audience, and I am confident that many of those viewers will become our future guests," said Darko Puharić, who has served as Director of the Vukovar Film Festival for the past four years.

Among the highlights of the opening ceremony, audiences will enjoy live performances by acclaimed Croatian pianist and composer Matej Meštrović and composer Borna Šercar, alongside a rich programme celebrating two decades of the festival.

Another highlight of this year's Vukovar Film Festival is the establishment of cultural partnerships with two of the region's leading film festivals. The first is the Sarajevo Film Festival, the largest and most prestigious film festival in Southeast Europe. As the cities of Sarajevo and Vukovar have enjoyed a long-standing friendship, the organisers of both festivals have formalised that relationship through a special cultural partnership between the two events. The collaboration aims to strengthen cultural ties, encourage the exchange of film programmes, develop new joint projects, and promote both festivals internationally.

The partnership has already resulted in a brand-new programme section entitled "The Heart of Sarajevo in Vukovar", through which the Sarajevo Film Festival becomes the official guest festival of the Vukovar Film Festival during its landmark 20th anniversary edition. As part of the programme, audiences in Vukovar will have the opportunity to watch a curated selection of films previously screened at the Sarajevo Film Festival.

In addition to Sarajevo, the Vukovar Film Festival has also established cooperation with another renowned regional event, the Ivo Gregurević Croatian Film Days, held annually in Orašje. This year's edition will therefore welcome both the Sarajevo Film Festival and the festival from Orašje as official guests.

"Last year we began discussions about establishing partnerships with regional film festivals, and just ahead of this year's Vukovar Film Festival we successfully reached mutually beneficial agreements with our colleagues in Sarajevo and Orašje. Together with the live broadcast of our opening ceremony on HRT, this represents a major step forward for the festival. It further strengthens the Vukovar Film Festival's position among Croatia's leading cultural events while also reinforcing Vukovar's role as one of the cultural centres of Slavonia and the wider region," said Dragan Despot, Artistic Director of the Vukovar Film Festival, who is serving in the role for the second consecutive year.

Alongside its newly established partnerships with two major regional film festivals, the Vukovar Film Festival has also reached an agreement with CMC Television, which will produce a special full-length programme from the festival. In addition, the festival will host a dedicated evening titled "Music That Endures – CMC / Croatia Records", celebrating the enduring legacy of one of Croatia's greatest songwriters, Đorđe Novković.

The programme will feature a screening of the music documentary HITMAKER – Đorđe Novković, followed by a live concert by Boris Novković, who will perform some of his father's most celebrated compositions. By bringing together cinema and music audiences, the event promises to be one of the festival's most emotional and memorable highlights.

For the second consecutive year, Croatia Records will also present its Special Award for Outstanding Contribution to Film Music during the festival's closing ceremony, further recognising the essential role that music plays in the art of cinema.

The 20th Vukovar Film Festival will take place from September 2 to 5, continuing its established early-September schedule that coincides with the end of the summer holiday season and the beginning of the new school year.

The festival is organised under the patronage of the City of Vukovar, which also serves as the main organiser. Co-organisers include the Vukovar City Museum, Croatian Home Vukovar, the Vukovar Water Tower, and the Vukovar Tourist Board. This year's Golden Sponsor is Croatian Post (Hrvatska pošta).

This year's official festival jury brings together nine distinguished professionals from the worlds of film, visual arts and entertainment, who will select the winners in the feature-length, short fiction, documentary and animated film competitions.

The Feature and Short Fiction Film Jury consists of Austrian filmmaker Sabine Hiebler, whose feature drama 80 Plus won the top prize at last year's Vukovar Film Festival, acclaimed Croatian actor Goran Grgić, and Dubrovnik-based filmmaker Dora Šarić.

The Documentary Film Jury includes celebrated actress Ksenija Pajić, award-winning director, screenwriter and musician Domagoj Božidar Burić, and respected journalist Jelena Ružić.

For the second consecutive year, the animation programme has been curated by renowned film director and animator Ana Despot, while the Animated Film Jury is composed of academic painter Darko Bakliža, illustrator Manuel Šumberac, and filmmaker Eugen Bilankov.

The jury faces an exceptionally demanding task, as festival selectors led by Artistic Director Dragan Despot have assembled an outstanding line-up of contemporary cinema from around the world.

Among the highlights is Inheritance, the latest film by acclaimed Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski, starring the exceptional Sandra Hüller. The film received the Best Director Award at this year's Cannes Film Festival and is one of the most anticipated titles in the official competition.

Also screening at the festival is Minotaur, directed by renowned Russian filmmaker Andrey Zvyagintsev, which was honoured with the Grand Prix, the Cannes Film Festival's second-highest distinction after the Palme d'Or.

The official competition will also feature the Croatian premiere of the Romanian film Yellow Tie, directed by Serge Ioan Celebidachi, starring an international cast that includes Sean Bean, Miranda Richardson, and John Malkovich, the American actor who also holds Croatian citizenship.

The festival's youngest visitors will once again enjoy the fourth edition of Children's VFF, now firmly established as one of the festival's most popular accompanying programmes.

The complete programme of the 20th Vukovar Film Festival, including both the official competition and accompanying events, will be announced in August. Tickets for all screenings will go on sale from August 7 via the Entrio ticketing platform.
